Aussie Icon Sophie Monk calls on Australians to get stuck in to Aussie Tiger Prawns this National Prawn Day

Get involved in National Prawn Day on Saturday March 18 and celebrate Australia’s Aussiest prawns, Tropic Co Tiger Prawns.

Tropic Co has joined forces with Australian icon and prawn lover, Sophie Monk, to celebrate the Aussie Tiger Prawn on National Prawn Day, Saturday 18th March. This classic Aussie duo are encouraging all Australians to slip an extra Tiger Prawn on the barbie, and enjoy the sweet flavour of quality, fresh Australian Tiger Prawns while they are in season.

It’s easy to get involved in National Prawn Day. Simply head to a participating venue, get your mates over and host a Tiger Prawn Feast, or simply pick up some Aussie Tiger Prawns from your local fishmonger or supermarket to enjoy at home.

National Prawn Day was initiated by Tropic Co to celebrate all the delicious reasons to enjoy Australian Prawns, special occasion or not. Why wait for Christmas and Easter, you don’t need an excuse to grab life by the prawns! Sweet in flavour with iconic bright tiger stripes, Tropic Co expects Australians will consume approximately 200 million Australian Tiger Prawns this season, which equates to seven prawns for every Australian. Whether it’s an arvo with your relos or a ‘bevvo’ with your mates, there’s no dish Tropic Co prawns can’t make fabbo.

Sophie says, “I’m as Aussie as a Tiger Prawn and I’m obsessed with how easy they are to whip up, even for a complete amateur in the kitchen like me. I bring out some in a bowl when hanging out with Josh and friends by the pool, or having a relaxing afternoon bevvy. And if I feel like something a bit more spesh for dinner, there are so many easy ways to add Aussie Tiger Prawns to any dish. Hands down one of my favourite things to eat.”

“This National Prawn Day, get your mates over for a prawn feast, head to your local fishmonger or supermarket to grab fresh Tropic Co Tiger Prawns, or try my simple yummo Prawn Cocktail recipe all for yourself. So go on, slip an extra Tiger Prawn on the barbie. It'd be un-Australian not to! And as I tell my non-Aussie mates, it’s not a bloody shrimp, it’s a Tropic Co Tiger Prawn.”

To participate in National Prawn Day, Tropic Co is encouraging Aussies to put more prawns on their plate, and whether your go-to flavour is Greek, Thai, Italian or Japanese, there’s no dish that Tropic Co

prawns can’t make better. This simple versatile prawn can turn into crowd favourites like Saganaki, Pad Thai, Risotto, Tempura, and Sophie’s faves, the Prawn Cocktail or fresh prawns simply served with lemon and dipping sauce.

To celebrate the day, Tropic Co is hosting National Prawn Day events across the country at participating fishmongers, which will give Australians the chance to taste the fresh produce, get a sweet gift with purchase and show off their prawn peeling skills in the ‘The Great Australian Prawn Peel Off’. This exciting opportunity to compete for a Guinness World Record is still up for grabs, with last year’s winner peeling 18 prawns under one minute - just three away from the Guinness World Record of 21.

Veronica Papacosta, CEO of Seafood Industry Australia, says, “Australia proudly produces some of the best prawns in the world, and we love seeing people around the country enjoying fresh prawns for any occasion. National Prawn Day is a fantastic initiative and the perfect opportunity for people to visit their local stockist and put more prawns on the menu, at home, and when dining out.”

“Our seafood partners, including Tropic Co, operate under some of the strictest environmental regulations in the world, and we commend their commitment to sustainability and protecting our beautiful Australian landscape.”

Prawns are one of the most nutritionally filled proteins you can incorporate into your diet as they are full of rich health benefits. Tropic Co’s Aussie Tiger Prawns are sweet and juicy in flavour and firm in texture, whilst also being a rich source of Omega 3 and low in fat.

This National Prawn Day, Saturday March 18, don't just choose any prawn, choose Tropic Co - Australia’s most Aussie Prawn. Nothing brings out the Aussie in you like a tasty prawn!
