Elio’s Place Melbourne CBD
Brother And Sister Duo To Bring An All-Day European-Inspired Bistro To Flinders House
This July, dynamic sibling duo Adam and Elisa Mariani – masterminds behind CBD hotspots Greta and Maverick – will launch Elio’s Place, an all-day European-inspired bistro located in historic Flinders House on Flinders Lane.
With the bistro name paying homage to the siblings’ late father ‘Elio’ – who cherished good meals and engaging conversations – it is set to bring to life a welcoming venue showcasing the best of Italian hospitality.
The breakfast menu will guide city dwellers to embrace a European approach to their first meal of the day with a choice of sweet and savoury staples. Lunch and dinner includes shared plates for those keen to take pleasure in a sit-down meal, along with made-to-order sandwiches for those on the go. There will be an aperitivo from 3 pm to 5 pm daily, with a curated wine list featuring local and international producers plus classic and soon-to-be signature cocktails.
Group Executive Chef Gareth Flood (Greta, Maverick and Mayday) has dedicated almost seven years to working alongside the sibling duo and is set to deliver rotating bistro classics inspired by Italian, Spanish, French and British culinary traditions – all delivered with modern Australian flair.
With an extensive fit-out in place, this will be the siblings’ most ambitious venue to date. Elio’s Place will seat 90, with cozy front and kitchen bars, as well as a private dining room space seating 24, allowing seamless transitions from day to night.
Designed by interior agency Studio Co & Co, the fit-out takes its cues from Flinders House, while also layering in contemporary touches. Expect a modern resurrection with a dash of old-world Euro charm that melds seamlessly with the exterior’s Renaissance style.

About Flinders House
A six-storey rendered brick former warehouse on bluestone footings. Built as a small structure in the early 1860s, it was remodelled in the Italian Renaissance Palazzo style and refurbished into a five-storey building by the builder Turnbull & Dick for the clothing manufacturers Banks Brothers Bell & Co in 1870. The present shop facades with terracotta faience and Egyptian motifs were added in 1928. Refurbished and subdivided into sixty residential apartments and two shops in 2000.
Preferred language:
- bistro (not bar and bistro)
- espresso (not coffee)
- breakfast (not brunch)
- aperitivo (not happy hour)
- open early / up late (not trading hours)
- Whilst the venue nods to Italy, we prefer it framed as ‘European’.
